Ed's take on effort and hard work on the volleyball court:
After 20 years playing beach volleyball I have found that there may be some rules we need to follow on the court that are enforced by the supernatural. A pastor friend of mine said that God tends to stay out of volleyball games; I beg to differ.
Volleyball Gods Rule #1 Work Hard.
Make the extra effort every time a ball is close to hitting your line. Run there and it will land out, or maybe you'll play it. Stand and hope? Yeah, that's gonna cost you a point every single time. The Volleyball Gods will see to it.
Volleyball Gods Rule #2 Work Hard.
Make the extra effort every time a ball is close to coming over the net. Run there and it'll almost certainly fall back on your opponent’s side. Stand and hope? Yeah, it's gonna come over, you're gonna look dumb, and it's gonna cost you a point every single time. The Volleyball Gods don't like lazy. Starting to see a trend?
Volleyball Gods Rule #3
No Complacency. How many times have you been up 17-13, thought to yourself, "we've got this one…" then switched at 18-17 terrified and momentum-less? Yeah, The Volleyball Gods smack that sort of attitude down and make you regret it. Work hard till the job is done.
More Volleyball God Rules to follow, as they're revealed. I spend enough time around the game that I hear them whispered to me every now and again.
With absolute tongue-in-cheek,
Ed Ratledge
Was this ball going in or out? All depends on my hustle
