The Huntington Beach Pro-Am

The Pro-Am is back.

It has a permanent date (last weekend of February) and a permanent home. (Unless Ryan wants to take it back.)

A little history: Back in 2005 Ryan Mariano started a project. And it became a Huntington Beach tradition. Originally created as a means for top players to mess around/play ball with potential sponsors, it became a very competitive tournament where top amateurs paired with top pros to take home cash. Ryan worked very hard to create the tournament from scratch, run it, and provide great prizes. Having been his partner for 7 years, I'm keenly aware of some of the great difficulties he overcame. These were (In no particular order) Getting screwed by the city on permit fees, Being given too few courts and having to build new ones, Getting to beach and finding nets ripped to pieces by a windstorm, Tsunami, Constantly fielding idiotic questions, Attending to copious helpings of complaints… And on and on. Running the Pro-Am is no easy job, but Ryan has dubbed me his successor, and I, Ed Ratledge, shall do my best to carry on his tradition of under-appreciated hard work. And yes, his tournament really did get stopped by a Tsunami.

Dates, Times, Cost

2017 Pro-Am will be February 25th
We will likely run it on the final Saturday of February each year.
In case of a rain-out we'll move to the following day for those who are able. (and refund or re-shuffle those who aren't.

Times:
9am Start, 8:30 Check-in

Cost:
$60/team

The Pro-Am will be played on Huntington State Beach at Newland Street.
Playing at the pier was great, but if you had 40 courts with clean sand and permanent lines available to you 363 days per year, would you really muck around with pulling a permit to over-pay the city to hold the tournament there? Most of the money is going to charity and HB isn't my favorite charity…
